Munich Christmas Markets 2026: Dates, Stops and a Crowd-Smart Day Plan
Dates, prices and the order to walk Munich's winter markets, including the 138 stalls on Marienplatz and a lake steamer parked on a railway bridge.
Av Chiara FontanaWhere Munich actually eats

The spruce in front of the neo-Gothic Neues Rathaus stands 30 m high and carries thousands of lights. The market ringing it runs 138 licensed stalls in 2026, opening on 20 Nov and trading to 24 Dec, with one dark day on Totensonntag, 22 Nov. The palace-courtyard village a few streets away opens first, on 16 Nov.
Marienplatz before the evening crush

Glühwein at Münchner Christkindlmarkt am Marienplatz, the city's flagship market, is €5 to €6, plus a €3 to €5 deposit on the mug you drink it from. Entry is free, the whole square is open-air, and a group can walk straight in without booking. The crowd thickens from 17:00 to 20:00 under the Glockenspiel tower, when the red-and-green roofed wooden stalls across the square stand shoulder to shoulder. Come before 17:00, meet at the Fischbrunnen fountain, and eat standing at the Rindermarkt end.
The market has been here since 1972. Its Kripperlmarkt nativity section runs along the Alter Peter and is the biggest crib market in Germany, part of this market rather than a separate trip.

A lunch stop at the Viktualienmarkt
Two minutes from Marienplatz, Winterzauber auf dem Viktualienmarkt lights Munich's permanent open-air food market for Advent, the blue-and-white striped maypole rising over the stalls. Twenty-four stands pour flaming punch and Glühwein and sell delicacies at €4 to €12 a go. In the beer garden, a nativity carries carved figures modelled on the market traders themselves.

Hours are 10:00 to 20:00, Monday to Saturday, from 20 Nov to 5 Jan 2027. It closes on Sundays and public holidays, so make it a weekday lunch. It's a daytime market and there's no seating plan.
Sendlinger Tor, five minutes from Marienplatz
Wooden huts pack in front of the brick medieval Sendlinger Tor gate, its wide arch lit and trams sliding past the square between the two round towers. Christkindlmarkt am Sendlinger Tor carries an unusually international stall mix, Peruvian nativities and Indian craft among them, with crafts from €10 and Glühwein at €5. Entry is free.

The 30th edition runs 20 Nov to 22 Dec 2026 under Eventfabrik München. The square sits on top of a U-Bahn interchange, which makes it the easiest central market to meet at. Pair it with Marienplatz on the same walk, five minutes apart.
Late afternoon in the Residenz Kaiserhof
Weihnachtsdorf in der Residenz fills the Kaiserhof, the enclosed Renaissance courtyard of the Residenz, where tall pale stone façades on all four sides block the wind. A wooden chapel and a life-size nativity stand against the walls, a Christmas pyramid turns, and a lit fir anchors the fairy-tale forest. Crafts start at €10 across more than 50 craft stands, and Glühwein or eggnog is €5 to €6.

It runs 16 Nov to 22 Dec 2026, opening before the other big central markets. The puppet theatre is free and the fairy-tale forest is built for children. Take children here first, and no courtyard in Munich looks prettier.
After dark on Wittelsbacherplatz
Pitch torches and open fire braziers light Münchner Adventsspektakel, the medieval market on the arcaded Wittelsbacherplatz, where costumed traders work rough plank stalls around the black equestrian statue of Maximilian I. Mead or Hexentrunk is €5 to €7 in heavy glazed clay mugs, with the deposit on top. Entry is free and the market is deliberately rowdy.

The 22nd edition runs 20 Nov to 23 Dec 2026 under Medieval Monacum, which has held this square since 2005. Fire shows run every Advent weekend, and staged fights and historical dance sit in the same weekend programme. Nothing else in central Munich looks like this.
The Feuerzangenbowle at the Isartor
In the cobbled inner courtyard of the Isartor, a rum-soaked sugarloaf burns blue above an outsized copper bowl, and the punch poured beneath it is €7 to €9. Students pay €5 on Tuesdays with ID. Long covered benches run under a frescoed tower wall.
Münchner Feuerzangenbowle am Isartor is billed as the world's largest. It opens 23 Nov 2026 and trades to 6 Jan 2027, serving to 01:00 on New Year's Eve and running through to Epiphany after the Christmas markets have packed up. The covered area takes reservations for four to 32 people, requested at least 24 hours ahead on 089 649436-0 or [email protected].

Skating at Karlsplatz

Münchner Eiszauber am Stachus lays an open-air rink across Karlsplatz in front of the medieval Karlstor arch, the curved Rondell façades and the domed Justizpalast behind it, Glühwein huts pressed against the rink barrier. You pay by skating slot here. Adult entry runs €8 to €14 by slot, cheapest from 10:30 and dearest for the 19:30 session. Children pay €6 to €10, and skate hire is €8 plus a €50 deposit or your ID.
It opens 13 Nov 2026 and skates on to 10 Jan 2027, outlasting every market on this walk. Monday is Tracht on Ice, free entry in Dirndl or Lederhosen. Saturday night is a party session and Sunday is two-for-one. Check the price of your time slot before you book.
Chinesischer Turm, Wednesday to Sunday
Brass players stand on the balcony of the five-storey wooden Chinese pagoda in the English Garden and play over the huts below, where Glühwein is €5. Weihnachtsmarkt am Chinesischen Turm also turns a children's carousel under the bare winter trees and runs a horse-drawn carriage on the park path, charged separately. The park setting and the tower musicians make this the one to walk out to.

Dates are 19 Nov to 23 Dec 2026, Wednesday to Sunday, plus 21 to 23 Dec. Check the day before you set off. Eisstockschießen, Bavarian curling, books online in Happy Hour, 14:00 to 17:00 and 17:00 to 20:00 slots, with two lanes running at once and 10 people to a lane.
Makers at Münchner Freiheit
White peaked artist tents run in a row across the Münchner Freiheit plaza, a large Kunstzelt gallery tent in the middle and 1970s Forum concrete framing the square. The exhibitors at Schwabinger Weihnachtsmarkt have organised and staffed it themselves since 1976, and more than 80 makers sell here. Original art, ceramics and jewellery run €20 to €200 and up, Glühwein is €5, and the price band is €€€.

The 50th anniversary edition runs 25 Nov to 24 Dec 2026. This is where you buy something that was not imported. The art tent gets tight at weekends, so browse on a weekday.
A Haidhausen evening at Weißenburger Platz
Fifty huts ring the stone fountain on leafy Weißenburger Platz, a tall lit fir at the centre and five-storey Gründerzeit tenement façades all round. Haidhauser Weihnachtsmarkt pours Glühwein, mead and festive beer at €4.50 to €6, and keeps a hand-carved South Tyrolean nativity. Locals will tell you it's the loveliest market in the city.

It runs 20 Nov to 24 Dec 2026 and is more than 45 years old. The market is quiet and residential. Fold it into a Haidhausen evening in the French Quarter.
Tollwood on the Theresienwiese
On the vast open Oktoberfest ground, a huge canvas Grand Chapiteau circus tent stands beside hangar-sized fairy-lit market tents, the colossal bronze Bavaria statue silhouetted on the hill behind. Tollwood Winterfestival fields 200 craft and fair-trade traders in its Markt der Ideen and more than 50 all-organic food stands, with plates at €10 to €18. Site and market entry are free, and more than 90% of the culture programme costs nothing.

Dates are 24 Nov to 23 Dec 2026. Circus and dance shows in the Grand Chapiteau are ticketed separately and are the one thing here to book ahead. If you've come from abroad and want more than Glühwein, make this your one stop.
Pink Christmas in the Glockenbachviertel
A small square in the Glockenbachviertel is washed entirely in pink light, pink baubles and camp kitsch on every hut, a tiny drag stage with rainbow flags, bar fronts crowding the edges. Pink Christmas is Munich's LGBTQ+ market, free, open to everyone and in its 22nd year, with the warmest atmosphere in the city. Glühwein and cocktails run €5 to €9.

It trades evenings only, from 16:00 Monday to Friday and from 14:00 at weekends, and runs 20 Nov to 20 Dec 2026, closing a full four days before the others. A DJ plays from 18:00 Monday to Saturday and the drag show is on Sundays. The square is small, so come on a weekday evening.
The Alte Utting and Bahnwärter Thiel
A 1950s Lake Ammersee passenger steamer sits hoisted whole onto a disused railway bridge over the street, hull and railings outlined in fairy lights. Sternenflotte auf der Alten Utting puts stalls on the open deck and in the arches beneath, with drinks at €5 to €8, food at €9 to €15 and an ice-stock lane in the gravel harbour alongside. Opening night is 18 Nov 2026 and it runs to 23 Dec, with full daily hours only from mid-December. Nothing else in Munich photographs like it in winter. The deck is small, so go early on a weekday evening.

Mondscheinexpress am Bahnwärter Thiel works wasteland in the Schlachthofviertel, with stacked graffiti-covered shipping containers and retired U-Bahn carriages around oil-drum fires, neon signage and scrap-metal sculpture. Organic Glühwein is €5 and street food is €8 to €14, from makers' stalls that sell handmade gifts and no nutcrackers. The yard is industrial and gives you standing room, live music and a young crowd. It runs 19 Nov to 23 Dec 2026, from 17:00 on weekday evenings and from 13:00 at weekends, and takes no reservations. Arrive before 19:00 on a weekend night.
